Sam Altman’s World identity verification project is launching in the UK, starting in London and expanding to cities like Manchester and Birmingham. The system uses a spherical eye-scanning device called the Orb to authenticate human identities and combat AI-driven fraud. Users receive World ID and some WLD cryptocurrency upon verification, which can be used on platforms like Minecraft, Reddit, and Discord.
Major tech firms, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, are accelerating the development of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) to reduce reliance on Nvidia's expensive AI hardware. While these companies continue to purchase Nvidia chips, they are also investing in in-house ASIC designs and reserving production capacity at TSMC, the world's largest contract chip manufacturer. Nvidia, however, is countering this shift by forming partnerships with ASIC makers through its NVLink Fusion initiative.
Meta is reportedly in discussions to invest billions of dollars in Scale AI, with the deal potentially exceeding $10 billion—making it Meta’s largest external AI investment. Scale AI specializes in data labeling services, helping companies like Microsoft and OpenAI train AI models. The company saw $870 million in revenue last year and expects to reach $2 billion this year.
AI-powered agents are reshaping the enterprise software landscape, intensifying competition between Salesforce and SAP. Traditionally, Salesforce dominated front-office operations (customer relations), while SAP led in back-office functions (finance, supply chain). However, AI is blurring these distinctions, enabling both companies to expand into each other's domains. This shift is driving innovation and strategic repositioning as AI agents automate workflows across business functions.
Duolingo faced backlash after announcing its AI-first strategy, which involved replacing contract workers with AI-generated content. Users criticized the move, arguing that it undermined human expertise in language learning. The company initially went silent on social media but later clarified that AI was meant to enhance rather than replace employees.
