  • China's National University of Defence Technology revealed a mosquito-sized bionic drone measuring just 1.3 centimeters, equipped with AI capabilities and radar-evading technology. The micro-drone features ultra-miniature cameras and microphones, operates via smartphone interface, and can perform covert surveillance in urban and indoor environments.

  • U.S. lawmakers are pushing a federal “AI moratorium” that would bar states from regulating AI for five years. The controversial provision—tucked into a must-pass bill ahead of the July 4 deadline—has backing from Sam Altman (OpenAI), Palmer Luckey (Anduril) and Marc Andreessen, who fear a state-by-state patchwork of rules hindering innovation. Critics, including many in both parties and Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei, warn it would strip consumer protections and leave Big AI firms largely unaccountable.

  • Meta hired four notable AI researchers from OpenAI on Friday, including Jiahui Yu (former Perception team lead), Shuchao Bi, Shengjia Zhao, and Hongyu Ren, as part of an aggressive talent acquisition strategy for its new Superintelligence group. The hiring spree has prompted OpenAI to "recalibrate" compensation packages, with reports suggesting Meta is offering substantial signing bonuses to attract top researchers.

  • Seventy-six companies have submitted proposals to build Europe’s new AI “gigafactories,” far exceeding expectations. The EU has earmarked €20 billion (~$23 billion) to fund four such large-scale AI supercomputing hubs, each equipped with ~100,000 high-end AI chips. Bidders include major tech firms and data center operators across 16 countries, collectively planning to acquire over 3 million advanced AI processors.

  • Chinese tech giant Baidu announced it is making its Ernie 4.5 family of multimodal AI models open source under the Apache 2.0 license. The family consists of 10 different variants with parameter sizes ranging from 3B to 424B, trained using Baidu's PaddlePaddle framework. This move represents China's most significant public AI release since DeepSeek and signals a strategic shift toward open-source development to compete with proprietary models.
